
SCC releases statistics for 2019
2019 show an increase in cases filed with the SCC compared to 2018, double the number of applications of emergency arbitrators and no change in the number of investment arbitrations filed.
A total of 175 cases were registered by the SCC during 2019, an increase from 152 in 2018. Half of the disputes (88) were international, involving parties from 44 countries. Of the registered cases, 107 were filed under the SCC Arbitration Rules, and 52 under the SCC Rules for Expedited Arbitrations. The number of applications of emergency arbitrator increased to eight cases from four cases in 2018.
Some highlights from the 2019 statistics:
- The total value in dispute for all cases commenced in 2019 amounted to 1,639 billion EUR.
- Six new investment treaty arbitrations were registered 2019. This is the same number as in 2018.
- For the majority of cases administered under the Expedited Rules, an award was rendered within 3 months of referral (52% of the cases).
- 27% of the awards rendered under the SCC Arbitration Rules in 2019 were rendered within six months from the date of referral and 50% were rendered in less than twelve months from when the case was referred to the arbitrator or tribunal.
- The SCC received eight applications for the appointment of an Emergency Arbitrator in 2019. This is the second highest number since emergency arbitration was introduced. - Statistics regarding the appointed arbitrators show continued increase in the number of women appointed by the SCC; from 29% in 2018 to 32 % in 2019. The number of women appointed by parties dropped to 16 %, compared to 24 % in 2018. Looking at the development of appointments of women as arbitrators over the last five years, a positive trend emerges, albeit sometimes slower that hoped.
